Ingredients
  

  • 2 lbs small Michigan navy beans or other
  • 4 quarts hot water
  • 1-1/2 smoked ham hocks
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions 

  • Wash the beans and place in pot of hot water. Add ham hocks and boil slowly for approximately 3-1/2 hours, covered. Stir now and then. Take ham hocks from pot and remove meat. Cut in small pieces and return to soup. Braise onion in butter until light brown, then add to soup. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
