Instructions
In a mixing bowl combine the hot water and sugar or sweetening of your choice. Stir well and add the soda and beaten eggs.
In another bowl mix the flour, butter, salt, and spices. Work until fine crumbs are formed.
For crumb pie, turn the egg and sugar mixture into the pastry-lined pie pan; the edges should be well crimped. Spread the flour mixture over the top.
For gravel pie, alternate the egg and sugar mixture with the crumbs, ending with a good thick layer of crumbs.
Either way, bake at 450°F 10 minutes, reduce heat to 350°F, and bake about 20 to 25 minutes longer, or until the top feels fairly firm.
